Today's Lesson on Myotonic (Fainting) Goats:

Myotonics are called by many names:  Nervous Goats, Fainters, Stifflegs and Wooden Legged.  The condition that causes this is Myotonia Congenita, which causes the stiffening.  Myotonia (stiffening) is an inherited neuro-muscular condition which causes goats to stiffen or "lock up" when startled or overly excited.  If they are off balance when their muscles lock up, they will tip over!  You will see them in the "downed" position still chewing food or bleating.  The goat never loses consciousness.  The contraction and relaxation of these muscles results in very tender meat.  Myotonics are Meat Goats!  Myotonics carry more muscle mass in relationship to gross weight than Boers or other meat goats.  According to Texas A&M research, it has been proven these goats carry a 6 to 10 percent greater meat yield when using a Myotonic Buck for breeding!  Myotonics are sure-footed, hardy and adaptable.  They are gentle, curious and friendly making them great pets.  Does are excellent mothers, easy kidders and typically have multiple births.  In addition, research has also proven this breed to be more parasite resistant than other breeds.  Myotonics gained popularity thanks to the ONION CREEK RANCH and others like them, such as BENDING TREE RANCH and 7F RANCH.  We are pleased and proud to offer goats from these genetics!
